Dear Parent/Carer,


Firstly, I hope you and your family are safe and well and have enjoyed spending some time together following the easing of restrictions throughout the summer holidays. As we approach the start of the new school session, I wanted to give you some key information about what will be happening as we prepare to return to school.


Returning to School – August 2020
As you will know the Scottish Government has issued new guidance about safely returning to school next week for all our children. Taking this into account we will operate full time from Wednesday 12th August 2020 making some reasonable adjustments to the school day to support safe practices for children, staff, and our families. The full publication can be found on the Scottish Government website. The document sets out guidance and advice in the following areas:


• Risk assessment requirements for safe use of the building and for vulnerable groups (pupils and staff)
• Cleaning and personal hygiene requirements
• Grouping and distancing in schools
• PPE requirements
• Advice on face coverings
• Testing and Outbreak management
• School and public transport arrangements
• Contingency planning should schools require to lockdown again


Outlined below you will find key information for returning to Longhaugh Primary School.


What will the school day look like?
Our school day will alter slightly to support a staggered start and finish across the North East Campus. We will reduce lunchtime by 15 minutes to ensure that our children’s learning is not impacted by this change. The reason for this is to allow for social distancing of adults at the start and end of our school day. The school day for Longhaugh children will be 9:00 am until 3.00pm outlined as follows:


• 9:00 until 10:15 – in class learning
• 10:15 until 10:30 – playtime
• 10:30 until 12:15 – in class learning
• 12:15 until 1:00 – lunchtime
• 1:00 until 3:00 – in class learning
This will be reviewed in 2 weeks’ time.
Please can we ask you to not be in the playground more than five minutes before drop off and pick up times.


What will lunchtime look like?
All children will be encouraged to stay in school over lunchtime wherever possible. Children can bring their own packed lunch or have a school lunch. All lunch breaks will reduce to 45 minutes, so children do not lose any of their 25 hours learning entitlement. Please note that all lunches will be a cold packed lunch until October as this is a city-wide agreement. Some year groups will eat in classrooms with other groups in the atrium area.


What will Drop Off and Pick Up look like?
Classes will line up as normal practice and will be dismissed in the usual way with areas clearly labelled. While I would welcome parents of children from primaries 1 to 4 in the playground who are socially distancing, I would ask parents of children in Primary 5 to Primary 7 to ‘Drop and Go’ where possible, encouraging older children to make their own way out of the playground to your meeting point. If pupils are late for school, they should enter through the main campus door where they will be signed in.
What will children wear?


I am asking that our children wear school uniform from August, however ties do not need to be worn. I will relax this on outdoor gym days. If wearing school uniform poses any challenges, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I believe it is important however to re-establish school routines as quickly as possible for all children and uniform is a key part of this. You can purchase our school uniform from the BE School Wear shop. Pupils can bring a school bag with a water bottle, clearly labelled for their use only. Please do not allow your child to bring in any toys from home or share any personal belongings.


Parents Visiting School
In line with national guidance we would ask you not to visit school during the first term. We will be constantly reviewing this as the term progresses but will be communicating with you via telephone and our on-line platforms in the first instance. If you need to speak to your child’s class teacher or a member of the senior leadership team, please telephone the school office and you will always receive a return phone call. I would ask you not to approach class teachers in the playground at this current time, however you can make contact via Seesaw. If your child is unwell and they are required to go home during the school day you will of course be allowed to enter the school reception area to collect them. Shona Moffat, our school and family development worker, will not be carrying out any family groups or home visits at the current time but can be contacted daily via the school office.


Breakfast Club & After School Club
Our Tayside Contracts Breakfast Club will not be available in the first instance and when this changes in line with Scottish Government guidance I will write out to you. If your child currently has a place this will be carried forward. If you would like to apply for a place, please contact the school office.
Our After-School Club ‘Kids Fun House’ will start on Wednesday 12th August. If you need to use this service please contact kidsfunhouse@outlook.com or telephone 07508 907727. They also have a Facebook page where you can access relevant information. I can confirm that this service will operate until 6pm each day as is normal practice.


Extra-Curricular Clubs
Please note that we will not be operating any extra curricular clubs during the first term. I will write to you with more information with clubs available after the October holidays.


Safe Hygiene Protocol/Risk Assessment
We have taken reasonable steps to protect our children and staff. There will be a hygiene station in each classroom and each floor of the building. All children and staff will be required to wash their hands thoroughly and frequently throughout the school day. Children will be encouraged not to touch their faces and use a tissue to cough or sneeze. Appropriate signage is in place across our campus. Some staff may need to wear additional PPE e.g. masks/visors when carrying out duties. There is no requirement for physical distancing with pupils in primary school, however adults will be encouraged to keep the 2m rule. Where this is not possible, staff can wear a face covering. Pupil movement around the school will be minimal. Signage is in place to support safe movement around the campus. Most of the school day will be in class and access to break out areas will be strictly controlled by staff.


The first day back for pupils will be an induction back into the building. Children will enjoy normal outdoor breaks, however will play in designated areas supervised by school staff.


COVID-19 symptoms
We should all remain vigilant for the symptoms of COVID-19. The most common symptoms are as follows:
• new continuous cough
• fever/high temperature
• loss of, or change of smell or taste


Please do not send your child to school if symptomatic. Further guidance is available on the NHS website.
We have a protocol and procedure in place should a pupil or staff member become unwell and display symptoms while in school. These procedures follow Public Health guidelines. Should this happen to a pupil, parents will be contacted and asked to collect them from school. For this reason, we ask that all parents/carers or emergency numbers are always available to be contacted when pupils are in school and we have up to date contact details.


Vision, Values and Aims
To keep everybody safe we will regularly remind pupils of our school VVA. All pupils will always be expected to follow this. These are detailed below:
It is extremely important that pupils, particularly our older pupils try to follow and respect social distancing requirements including 2m from all adults. We will remind our pupils about the importance of co-operating with staff and following instructions.


Whilst it is a full-time return to school, it is important we are still vigilant and carefully manage all risks. Staff will regularly remind pupils of our safe practice and I seek your support in reinforcing these key messages at home. The guidance will be closely monitored and reviewed.


After such a difficult time, I am really looking forward to having all our children back to school very soon. I trust this information is helpful to you and please do not hesitate to contact me with any queries or concerns. School staff will be in the building from Monday 10th August.

Returning to School – August 2020

What will the school day look like? - Primary 1 only
Our school day will alter slightly to support a staggered start and finish across the North East Campus. The reason for this is to allow for social distancing of adults at the start and end of our school day. The school day for Longhaugh P1 children will be 9:00 am until 12 noon for the first 3 weeks. Children should be collected outside the classroom door; a packed lunch will be provided. A staggered start is in place for day 1, our SFDW will contact you by phone to inform you of this time. If you have siblings they can attend at the same time, a member of staff will be at the back door until 10.15am.
Please can we ask you to not be in the playground more than five minutes before drop off and pick up times.
What will lunchtime look like?


All children will be encouraged to stay in school over lunchtime wherever possible. Children can bring their own packed lunch or have a school lunch. All lunch breaks will reduce to 45 minutes, so children do not lose any of their 25 hours learning entitlement. Please note that all lunches will be a cold packed lunch until October as this is a city-wide agreement. Some year groups will eat in classrooms with other groups in the atrium area. Primary 1 children are mornings only and will be provided with a lunch to take home.

Bingo Evening- Wednesday 27th March

 

As part of our school trip fundraising efforts the Parent Council are hosting a Prize Bingo evening in the school atrium on Wednesday 27th March.  Doors open at 6.30pm with eyes down at 7pm prompt. It is going to be an exciting night with lots of prizes to be won.

Included in the £5 ticket for Adults and the £1 ticket for children are your books, tea, coffee or juice and a biscuit. Additional books will be available at a cost of £I per book on the night.

Letters have been sent home or you could contact the school office for tickets.

The P7s are organising a fantastic Bingo Night on Tuesday 27th March -eyes down at 7pm. All money raised will go towards the P7 activity week in the summer term. there are lots of prizes to be won and there will be refreshments on the night.

World Book Day

A reminder of our World Book Day Activities that are going on all week. 

Monday 26th February: Catch you reading.

Read in as many different ways as you can throughout the week. Try to read in as many ways as you can. Hand in your completed sheet on Friday 2nd March. Reading to a pet is a brilliant idea!

Tuesday 27th February: Character creations

Can you make a junk model of your favourite character from a book? It could be the Gruffalo, Harry Potter or the big bad wolf! Wednesday 28th February: Take a “Shelfie”

Take a “shelfie”  - a picture of yourself with your bookshelf. Be as creative as you can. Send your picture to the school email address: longhaughprimary@dundeecity.gov.uk or send it to us on Twitter (@LonghuaghPS) .

Thursday 1st March: World Book Day

Drop everything and read. At different points during the school day the bell will ring and the children will need to stop what they are doing and read for 10 minutes (P1 and P2 will be read to during these times)

Friday 2nd March: Mrs Jenkins and Mr Smith reading in class.

During the course of the day Mrs Jenkins or Mr Smith will pop into every class and read one of their favourite stories.

 

 

 

DD4 Pipes and Drums

More that 20 of our P6 and P7 pupils took part in the Pipes and Drums kick Start weekend at Fintry Primary School.

Christmas Service

We had a lovely Christmas service at Fintry Church. Thanks to Mr Brough and to Ross for hosting the service. Also, huge thanks to Miss Suszko and the choir who were amazing!

P4-7 trip to the Rep Theatre

P4-7 got into the Christmas spirit with a fantastic trip to the Rep Theatre.

Everyone had a brilliant time watching 'A Christmas Carol'.

A huge thank youto the Aspire project which funded the entire trip.
