Attendance

The vision for Dundee City Council is to ensure that all learners have the opportunity to receive a world class education and learning experience that will help them maximise their potential and guarantee pathways to future successful lives.

In order to achieve this, Dundee City Council have created an agenda called "Every Dundee Learner Matters".

This will focus on 'Three Ps':

PRESENCE - ensuring that all children and young people attend regularly and promptly.
PARTICIPATION - creating a climate withing schools where all children and young people feel welcomed and valued; and
PROGRESS - developing policies and practices that maximise the achievement and ambitions of all children and young people.

As a school community we believe that children need to be present to participate in activities and progress in their learning, therefore we are working hard to make improvements. Our current attendance target is 94% and our aim, with your help, is to achieve this. We are strengthening our attendance policies and looking at ways we can support improvement in late-comings and attendance.

The Senior Leadership Team in Longhaugh meet regularly to discuss all aspects of attendance.

At these meetings, staff discuss any concerns around absence and late-comings.

Actions from these meetings include, regular monitoring of pupils, letters to parents and carers, meetings with parents and carers to discuss attendance. These meetings are to find out if there are any barriers to attendance and to see if any support can be provided.

When there has been no improvement and sustained poor attendance, we are obliged to follow the guidelines issued by Dundee City Council to involve other agencies and to request an Attendance Hearing, or Children's Panel Hearing.

We know that poor attendance results in poor outcomes for children and are keen to have your support.

You can help by:

  • Contacting us if your child is unwell.
  • If you are unsure whether your child is well enough to be in school, contact Shona, our School and Family Worker, who can keep an eye on your child and call if they appear too unwell to be in.
  • Promoting good attendance with your child and talking about the importance of being in school.
  • Contact Shona, our School and Family Development Worker if you have concerns around attendance or worries for your child.

We understand that children can be unwell and these things cannot be helped, however we value your support in encouraging good attendance.
